Gilded Cushion Ring – click here

This ring project combines the cool, seductive shimmer of labradorite with the warm glow of 18k gold, capturing a luxurious cushion-shaped cabochon in a tall gold bezel and thick bowl of sterling silver. The setting balances atop a squared-off double ring band held open with pebbles of 18k gold, set so the edge texture is celebrated instead of hidden. This substantial ring celebrates the contradictions of modern and classic, clean and rough, light and dark, warm and cool.

This is an intermediate class that makes use of basic fabrication skills in new ways. You’ll learn how to fit a convex bezel to a concave backplate for a substantial setting. You’ll create texture, and learn the tricks of accurately sizing a squared off ring band. In fact, you’ll do it twice – then marry the pair with gold granules you’ll make yourself. Along the way, you’ll learn tricks for clean joins and simple, fool-proof soldering using a simple butane torch… and how to add gold to your designs for maximum impact.
