Sarah Long | Pot of Gold Rings | Tuesday, January 31, 2023 | 9:00 am until 4:30 pm

$195.00

You create with silver. You have silver scrap. Learn an easy way to completely melt and reuse your bench silver that does not involve a crucible or ingot mold and can all be done with a butane torch.

Create a wrapped ring band that by design can be either adjustable or soldered to a particular size and a heavy gauge cupped focal…both of which are made entirely of scrap sterling silver. The ring’s domed cup is then embellished with gold.

Techniques covered include: melting, forging and annealing silver, using a rolling mill and measuring gauge with digital calipers, dapping heavy gauge silver, sawing, filing. Finish the ring with an easy method of organically applied 18K gold and achieving a deep patina.

Additional Class Comments:

In the interest of time and to help ensure that everyone’s remilled ring blank will work, each student will be provided with a ring blank and an additional smaller blank for the focal, created in Sarah’s studio and provided in the class kit. We will still each perform the melting and forging process to create the ingots we would have then processed through the rolling mill. We’ll watch and discuss the rolling process, but this literally saves us 2 (or more!) hours of class time and will avoid leaving anyone behind in the event of a “forging fail”. Students are asked to bring 1 troy ounce of sterling silver scrap to melt for their practice ingot. If you would prefer, you may purchase the 1 Toz of sterling scrap from the instructor at the start of class. More details will be provided in the introduction email leading up to the day of the class.
