Vivi Magoo LTD | The Dreamers and Doers Part II | Anne Mitchell | September 12-16, 2018
Welcome to Vivi Magoo LTD
Dreamers and Doers, Part Two
As a designer and creator, how do you take an image or idea that captures your imagination all the way to a completed design?
In this three day intensive, each student will complete an advanced pendant and chain creation.
The first day of class will be broken down into two sections. The morning will be spent prepping your casting crucible. The fun will begin after that when students will begin melting fine silver and creating broom casting nuggets. Don’t like your original pour? That’s okay; remelt your metal, and try again.
On Day Two we will begin the design phase, decisions will be made on project layout, embellishments and more. Want to add gold to your piece? Anne will show you how to electroplate. Want to add enameling? She’s your guide and will show you how. Bezels? Yes! She’ll assist you in working through the challenges of implementing your envisioned designs, and working with materials and skills at hand.
Day Three will include advanced chain-making adventures. We will deconstruct the techniques and requirements for more complex chain forms that include layering and mixing up link sizes, styles, shapes and wire gauges. Designing the chain is only half the fun; the real challenge comes from solving the puzzles of construction that advanced chain forms require. Some of the chain-making skills we will explore are fusing, hammering, shaping, and texturing.
You’ll create a closure for your piece and finalize the assembly of your work. We will work on patination and finish-polishing techniques that are the final flourishes in good craftsmanship that will transform the work into a gallery-ready masterpiece.
Each participant should optimally have an intermediate level of experience with fine silver fusing and basic metal smith techniques. Students should be comfortable using a hand-held butane torch, and have a basic understanding of the tools on a metal smith’s workbench such as various hammers, the bench block, jeweler’s saw and a variety of texturing tools.
Who should take this class?
Ideal participants for this class are artists yearning to expand their skill base in working with fine silver and other metal techniques. We explore ways of thinking about design and the transformation of ideas into gallery-quality finished pieces of art jewelry, while working through the constraints, challenges and limitations of the materials and techniques. The class environment will be a creative hive of open discussion and development of ideas, while we pound, hammer, bend, rivet and shape our visions into reality.
